Chinese President reaffirms push for Taiwan unification in new year speech

Chinese President Xi Jinping declared Tuesday that "no one can stop” China’s unification with Taiwan, renewing Beijing’s commitment to bringing the self-governed island under its control.

In a New Year speech broadcast on state media, Xi emphasized the cultural and familial ties between mainland China and Taiwan, describing unification as a "historical trend.”

"Chinese people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait are one family,” Xi said. "No one can sever our blood ties, and no one can stop the historical trend of the reunification of the motherland.”

Taiwan, a democratic island, has faced increasing military and political pressure from Beijing.

Since Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te took office in May, China has staged three rounds of military drills, including the largest in years earlier this month, according to Taiwanese officials. Beijing has not confirmed the exercises.

Xi’s speech comes weeks before U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration on January 20. Trump has vowed to take a tougher stance on China, accusing it of unfair trade practices and suggesting higher tariffs.

Taiwan remains a critical point of contention between Beijing and Washington. The U.S. does not officially recognize Taiwan but remains its largest arms supplier and strategic ally.

Analysts warn that heightened tensions over Taiwan could escalate further as both Xi and Trump stake strong positions.
