Palestinian journalist killed in Israeli airstrike

A Palestinian journalist was killed and nine others were wounded early Monday when an Israeli airstrike hit a tent used by local media near Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, southern Gaza, according to medics and the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate.

The strike ignited a fire that engulfed the tent, which was situated inside the hospital compound. Verified footage from the scene showed flames consuming the structure, while people scrambled to extinguish the blaze.

Images circulating online, some unverified, showed a journalist on fire and a colleague rushing to save him.

Journalist Helmy al-Faqawi died in the attack, with his blue press flak jacket later draped over his body at a funeral attended by dozens of reporters and relatives. A second person was also killed, local medics confirmed.

"We will continue to deliver the message and convey the truth to the whole world. This is our humanitarian duty,” said fellow journalist Abd Shaath, who said they were jolted awake by the strike and rushed to help their colleagues.

The attack brings the total number of journalists killed in Gaza since October 7, 2023, to more than 210, according to the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate.

The airstrike was part of continued Israeli operations across Gaza. Local health officials reported at least 10 people killed by Israeli strikes on Monday alone. Israel has not commented on the strike.

Israel’s military campaign in Gaza since October 7, 2023 Hamas attack has killed over 50,000 people, created a massive humanitarian crisis, and widespread displacement.

Hamas’ cross-border raid into Israeli territory claimed 1,200 lives. It also took more than 251 people captive.
